P0401 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Flow Insufficient Detected
What it means, what causes it, and what it costs to fix.
What P0401 means
EGR routes a little exhaust back into the intake to cool combustion and cut NOx emissions. The computer opened the EGR valve and didn't see enough flow. Usually the valve or its passages are clogged with carbon.
Can I drive with P0401?
Severity: Medium. Fix soon so it doesn't turn into something bigger.
Usually drivable. You may hear pinging or knocking under load. Avoid heavy towing until it's fixed.

- Pinging or knocking when accelerating
- Check engine light
- Failed emissions test (high NOx)
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Carbon-clogged EGR passages (very common on some Hondas and Fords)
- Stuck EGR valve
- Faulty EGR position or DPFE sensor
- Cracked vacuum hose to the EGR valve
How to diagnose P0401
- Command the EGR open at idle with a scan tool. The engine should stumble. If it doesn't, flow is blocked.
- Remove the valve and inspect it, along with the intake passages, for carbon.
- On older Fords, test the DPFE sensor and its hoses.
Tip: most US auto parts stores will read your codes for free.
Repair costs
| Clean EGR passages | $100–$400 |
| EGR valve | $250–$600 installed |
| DPFE sensor | $80–$200 installed |
Typical US prices. Your vehicle, region, and shop rates will change these.
